Hearings tonight for Bayland project, budget

August 12, 2021

The public is invited to participate in a hearing at tonight’s council meeting about the proposed construction of an access roadway to the hotel/convention center project on Bayland Island.

After the hearing, council will vote on building the roadway, which is an extension of Wyoming Street on the southside of Highway 146. The Goose Creek Trail is also located in the area.

City Manager Rick Davis said a groundbreaking date is now set for Sept. 15 for the hotel/convention center project.

Davis said to make improvements to the road, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department code requires Baytown’s governing body to determine that there is no other feasible place for it.A public hearing for the city’s $245.4 million budget is also tonight. The budget contains an adopted tax rate of $0.785 per $100 of assessed value, which is a 1.015-cent reduction from the previous year’s rate of 79.5-cents or 79.515%. In addition, the proposed budget keeps the $60,000 exemption from last year for residents over 65 as well as disabled.

The meeting begins at 6:30 tonight at City Hall, 2401 Market St.
