FedEx Ground inks big distribution center lease in Baytown

August 4, 2022

FedEx Ground signed a major deal to open its 10th distribution center in the Houston area, bringing possibly hundreds of new jobs to Baytown.

The package distribution facility is being developed by Houston-based McNair Interests and Pontikes Development in the Port 10 Logistics Center, located southeast of Interstate 10 and Texas 330.

“FedEx Ground has entered into a lease agreement on a new, 337,000 square-foot distribution center located in Port 10 Logistics Center in Baytown," FedEx Ground said in an e-mailed statement. "The site was chosen because of its ease of access to major highways, proximity to customers' distribution centers and a strong local community workforce for recruiting employees."

Expected to open in November, the facility will employ a mix of full and part-time employees, according to FedEx Ground. The company also will contract for package pickup and delivery services with service provider businesses that hire locally for driver, helper, manager and other positions. The exact number of jobs was not specified."

This development is a milestone project, not just for Port 10 Logistics Center and Pontikes Development, but also for the city of Baytown," said Nick Pontikes, vice president construction and design at Pontikes Development. "With hundreds of parking spots, this is going to be a facility that creates jobs and benefits the community, including the citizens and workers of Baytown and its economy."

Pontikes said Port 10 Logistics Center, which broke ground on 246 acres near southeast corner of Interstate 10 and Thompson Road in 2018, is just starting to take off. To date, more than 420,000 square feet of warehouse space has been completed and leased at Port 10, which is planned for 3 million square feet. The company is developing a 400-car rail yard that will be opening in the fourth quarter and is preparing to break ground on a 500,000-square-foot rail-served warehouse, with another to follow. A 100,000-square-foot warehouse that will be completed next month is available for lease, and a 180,000-square-foot cross-dock building is designed and ready to be built, according to Pontikes.

FedEx Ground will begin recruiting for the new warehouse in the fall. Applicants can visit fedexgroundjobs.com and search ‘Baytown’ for information on the available positions. The company offers medical, dental, vision, paid time off and parental leave, as well as tuition reimbursement after a minimum threshold of service.

“FedEx is a leader in logistics and transportation and having their presence in our city adds to our impressive array of Fortune 100 companies,” said Baytown Community and Economic Development Manager  Bret Gardella.
