Construction Partners acquires Houston-based asphalt paving contractor

Construction Partners Inc. (Nasdaq: ROAD) has acquired another Houston-area company.

The Birmingham, Alabama-based company's most recent local purchase is Houston-based GMJ Paving Co. LLC, an asphalt paving contractor that works throughout the Houston metro area. GMJ has a hot-mix asphalt plant in Baytown, which is now CPI’s 12th in the area.

Financial details of the deal were not released.

Construction Partners President and CEO Fred Jules Smith III said a core component of its strategy is entering new markets with the right partners.

“We entered Houston last August with our acquisition of Durwood Greene Construction Co. (based in Stafford) and grew our operations significantly in October with our acquisition of the Houston-area construction assets of Vulcan Materials Co.,” Smith said in a Feb. 2 news release. “With the acquisition of GMJ, we are further expanding our market share and adding to our team of skilled and experienced operators with extensive local market knowledge and deep customer relationships that is well-positioned to serve one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing markets in the country.”

However, Houston isn’t the only place where the company has expanded recently.

CPI entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Austin-based Lone Star Paving for $950 million in 2024. In October, it acquired P&S Paving Inc., which is based in Daytona Beach, Florida. Financial details of that deal were not released.

Construction Partners builds and maintains roads and other public infrastructure, managing most parts of the process itself — from sourcing materials to construction. It operates in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. It operates hot-mix asphalt plants, aggregate facilities and liquid asphalt terminals and focuses on the construction, repair and maintenance of surface infrastructure.
